2010 Youth of the Year Candidates
Jonathon Curry
Red Mountain Branch
Jonathon has been a member of the Red Mountain Branch located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community for 10 years. He has participated in a variety of Club programs including the prevention/education program SMART Moves, Money Matters – a financial literacy program for teens – and Junior Golf. He takes advantage of any opportunity he has to mentor the younger members by tutoring in the homework room and demonstrates a commitment to being actively engaged in Club programs and with others. Jonathon is a senior at Alternative Learning Academy and plans to be the first in his family to attend college this fall pursue a degree.
Jackson Fogerty
Virginia G. Piper Branch
For Jackson, being a member of the Virginia G. Piper Branch has given him the opportunity to inspire others through recreational and educational programs. He has been a member for eight years and cherishes the relationships he has built with staff and members. As president of his branch’s Keystone Club, Jackson uses his leadership skills to inspire his peers to serve others by organizing community service projects. Jackson is currently a sophomore year at Desert Mountain High School where he is enrolled in International Baccalaureate classes and maintains a 4.5 GPA. Jackson plans to attend college and pursue a career as U.S. diplomat at a foreign embassy.
Kenneth Fitzgerald
Vestar Branch
For seven years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale has been influential in Kenny’s life—helping him grow into a responsible role model to fellow members at the Vestar Branch. One way Kenny is developing his leadership skills is by serving as secretary of his branch’s Keystone Club. Previously, he participated in several character and leadership programs including the Leaders in Training which teaches youth 11-13 years basic employment skills. Kenny is a senior at Horizon High School where he maintains a 3.75 GPA. He plans to attend Arizona State University in the fall and major in business communication. As for career goals, Kenny aspires to be a CEO of a marketing firm.
Stephanie Gillooly
Thunderbirds Branch
As an 11-year member of the Thunderbirds Branch, Stephanie sees the Club as a more than a physical building but as a big brother. “The Club is a place that encourages my quirks, rewards my successes and loves me like only an older sibling could.” Stephanie enjoys participating in programs such as Advanced Art, Keystone Club, and SMART Girls, a health, education and self-esteem initiative for girls ages eight to 17. She is a positive, uplifting individual and recognizes the rewards of hard work and focusing on her long-term goals. Stephanie is a junior at Saguaro High School and maintains a 3.8 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society and an assistant for the school nurse. Stephanie plans to attend college and pursue a career in the health care field.
James Grubb
Mary Ellen & Robert McKee Branch
For the past four years, the Mary Ellen & Robert McKee Branch in Fountain Hills has been an integral part of James’ life. The staff has served as his mentors and plays a large role in developing him as a responsible, compassionate person and role model. James enjoys many Club programs like the Digital Arts Festival, Passport to Manhood – teaches and reinforces positive behavior for male members ages 11 to 14 – and is the current president of the branch’s Keystone Club. He is also often found playing ping-pong in the games room with fellow members. James is a senior at Fountain Hills High School where he has maintained a 3.25 GPA. He plans to attend Scottsdale Community College in the fall and pursue a career in non-profit management.
Elaine Johnson
Lehi Branch
Elaine has been an active member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale for 12 years and is currently a member of the Lehi Branch located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. On a daily basis, she feels a strong connection to the Club on her life. “Having nothing or no one in your life for a long time, to then coming across something so simple and big leaves an impact – that is why the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale means the world to me.” Elaine has participated in Money Matters, SMART Girls, Keystone Club and the multi-cultural dance group. In her spare time, she enjoys dancing and playing softball. Elaine is a senior at Westwood High School and is looking forward to studying criminal justice in college.
Christian Rodriguez
Hartley & Ruth Barker Branch
Christian has been a Boys & Girls Clubs member for nine years and has attended the Hartley & Ruth Barker Branch for four years. He has participated in Club programs like Passport to Manhood, Building Unique Development Skills (BUDS), a mentoring program where he is partnered with a youth and serves as a positive role model, and is the current vice president of his branch’s Keystone Club. By participating in these programs, Christian has learned to be accepting and grateful for what he has in his life and to be compassionate to others who are in need. He is currently a junior at Coronado High School and plans to pursue a career in the medical field.
Erin Weber
Rose Lane Branch
For the past nine years, Erin has enjoyed being a member of the Rose Lane Branch where she is participated in a variety of educational and community service programs. She has participated in SMART Moves which promotes healthy lifestyle and choices and she has won many local and national Boys & Girls Clubs fine arts exhibit competitions. Erin has also been instrumental in the mentoring program called Book Buddies which pairs teens with younger members to read books together. She has a strong passion for the arts and enjoys sharing that passion with the younger members as an assistant in the art room. Erin is a senior at Saguaro High School and plans to attend the University of Arizona in the fall and pursue a career as a high school art teacher.
